Letters Between Jo and Father- Pre Little Women Movie

For Little Women Assignment Matrix I chose a task where you write a series of letters between two characters. I chose Jo and Mr March as my characters, and the letters are set just before christmas, the start of the movie. (please note the indents didn’t exactly work when I pasted this from a word doc).

Orchard House

Concord, Massachusetts

17th September

Dear Father,

I know, as much as I refuse to believe it, that you probably will never receive this letter. You’ve been away so long, and we all miss you more than you could ever imagine.

Marmee says we’re all developing into quite the young ladies. You may be wondering how we’re all coping with each other, and as a matter of fact we’re all coping in a civilized manner, in ways unknown to womankind! We sure do miss you greatly Father, remember us when you are serving the country as a brave and dignified man.

It’s Fall here and the crisp orange leaves are like little rays of sunshine for my writing. There are so many ideas that just flow from my pen in Fall; I guess it is one of my favourite seasons. The only bad thing is our garden is full of leaves that constantly need removing! Chores are such a bother, especially to Amy. I love her dearly but sometimes she infuriates me so much! Why can’t she stop complaining and start working like the rest of us?

Love Always,

Jo March.

Dearest Jo,

Oh how I wish I could ever receive any of your letters, or you mine. I know you’ve been sending them- you always do. They hardly ever get through, but sometimes they do. I received your letter from September and am glad to know that the family is well. I too miss you with all my heart and think of you, my family, every single day I’m here.

Fall is not too beautiful here. It’s a battlefield, but I try every day to cheer up fellow men. I caught a man crying alone last night, being away from family is hard for everyone; harder than I think sometimes. I comforted him as he told me about his blind daughter Gertrude and his handsome young son who is trying to go to war and fight for his country at only 16. The poor man. He did however seem very intrigued when I told him about my four little women.

I’m well but I must head off my dear. I love Marmee, Meg, Beth, Amy and of course my dear Jo. Make me proud.

Yours Truly,

Mr. March (Father)

Dear Father,

I know you probably wrote back but I didn’t receive your letter. The post has been a little unreliable lately and I’m slightly disheartened by the fact that I don’t know if this letter will even get to you, but I made a promise to myself and even to you that I’d write faithfully.

The food here isn’t too palatable but I do not complain! So many families have so little, and Meg certainly longs for more than just simple food. I long for fresh fruit and hot sausage, but I know to be grateful and peaceful, like a “lady”. I hate how people are so stereotypical like that! Girls have to be so refined and petty, why can’t we be respected like men.

Christmas is approaching so fast and with that the icy cold winter. Winter may be hard for us; money is scarce here in Orchard House. Marmee keeps us faithful though, her poise and calm nature is what I aspire to be one day. It’s probably just another dream because my nature is the complete opposite! I’m flawed in almost every way.

We think of you every day, and pray for you every night. Meg says she loves you, Beth says she adores you and Amy curses you for giving her such a wretched nose!

Always and Forever,

Your Jo

Dearest Jo,

It’s so melancholy being here in Winter. Everyone grieves and misses their families more than ever. Hearing the cries of desperation at night isn’t at all comforting, especially when some are my own.

Christmas upcoming in just a matter of weeks really opens your eyes. I miss my little women. Meg- full of spirit, full of promise, longs for riches. Beth- her slender fingers bouncing rhythmically across the keys of our old and worn piano. Amy- constantly focused on perfecting her physical appearance, not interested in school and education, daily insulting her own nose. Then there is you, my Jo, daring, courageous and unafraid. You never miss a beat; you will become a fine author some day.

I’m sure when all my little women grow old and it comes time for choosing a future you all will make the right choice. I know you will soon be preparing for another Christmas without father, maybe even without gifts, but trust me when I say that this is just the beginning.

Yours Apologetically,

Mr. March (Father)
